Alpine Reveals New Le Mans Racer After 35-Year Absence

type='html'>
|

The name Alpine used to be synonymous with endurance racing and now, after a 35-year absence, they have revealed their 2013 Le Mans racer named "Alpine No36", which is built in collaboration with Nissan and Signatech.
It uses a 4.5-liter V8 engine, sourced from the Japanese automaker, which puts out 500 hp. Weight is kept down to 900 kg (1984 lbs) and top speed is rated at 330 km/h, but it really depends on what gear ratios the team of mechanics decides to use for each racing venue.
They are openly admitting that this is part of the re-emergence of the Alpine brand, and they want to make the name heard again, before they debut their first road car, which is set to debut in 2016, and is being developed by Renault, with the help of Caterham.
Before starting to compete at the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours, as well as the European Le Mans Series (ELMS), the car will make its public debut around the modern Paul Ricard track, in France, on March 26-27. That is when the official ELMS test days have been programmed.
Alpine has already chosen the drivers, and they are Nelson Panciatici and Pierre Ragues for the ELMS, while Tristan Gommendy will also join them for the 24 hours race.

Mitsubishi Reveals 2014 Mirage Hatchback with 40MPG at the New York Auto Show

Seeing how…successful the i-MiEV was with North American buyers, the maker of the Lancer EVO, and once upon a time, of the Eclipse and 3000 GT as well, is expanding its local sub-compact offerings with the new Mirage, a small five-door hatch that measures jut 148.8 inches (3,779mm) long, 65.6 inches (1,666mm) wide and 59.1 inches (1,501mm) tall.The Mirage nameplate has been used in the past, though; this does not really explain Mitsubishi's "triumphant" press statement: "Making a triumphant return to the North American marketplace, the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door sub-compact is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline vehicle available in America."
Powering the U.S. market Mirage is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve-timing system, producing 74hp and 74 lb.-ft. of torque, with gearbox options including a 5-speed manual and a continuously-variable transmission (CVT), both driving the front wheels.
With the CVT, Mitsubishi estimates that the Mirage will return a fuel economy of 40 mpg combined, 37 mpg city and 44 mpg highway.
Standard features on all models will include seven air-bags; Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TC); automatic climate control; power windows with driver's side auto-up/down; power side mirrors; and a 4 speaker 140-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with USB/iPod input.
Sales of the 2014 Mirage in the States will begin this fall with pricing to be announced.

Ford Reveals All-New Transit Courier at Birmingham CV Show

type='html'>
|

Ford has chosen the 2013 Birmingham CV show to reveal its final new Transit-brandedcommercial vehicle, which completes the "transformation" of the Blue Oval's range. The latest model, the Transit Courier van, is the entry-level offering, and it, along with the rest of the updated range, is expected to drive a strong predicted increase in sales by the year 2016.
According to the automaker's European vice president of Product Development, Barb Samardzich, “Ford has now completely transformed its commercial vehicle line-up, with four all-new, class-leading Transits for European customers. With the all-new Transit range, we expect sales to grow to 400,000 units per year by 2016, well over 50 per cent more than we sell today.”
Set to go on sale in the spring of 2014, the Courier will be powered by the familiar range of diesel and petrol engines. If gasoline is  your thing, then the 99hp (100PS) 1.0-liter EcoBoost unit is available, but if it's all-out economy you're after, then either the 74hp or 94hp (75 or 95 PS) diesels will provide motivation.
Ford is also filling its Transit range with kit, and you can now specify pretty much anything you will find on their regular road cars, including a voice-activated in-car connectivity system, Ford SYNC, rear view camera and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), with the latter being fitted as standard.
Lugging loads won't be a problem either, and the maximum a Courier can carry is 660kg or 1,455 lbs. A source of pride also seems to be the load bay length, and this van can accommodate objects of up to 2.59 meters or 6.6 feet in length.

Maserati Officially Reveals New 2014 Ghibli Sedan, Confirms Turbo'd V6 Petrols and Diesel

type='html'>
|

As we suspected, the photos of the brand-new 2014 Maserati Ghibli sedan that surfaced online Monday night were indeed real, as the Italian automaker came out with an official announcement containing some initial details and a batch of higher-resolution images that allow us to get a closer look at the luxury sports sedan.
Built on a shortened version of the platform that underpins the also-new Quattroporte, the more compact-sized Ghibli is expected to measure less than 5 meters in length or roughly the same as a BMW 5-Series sedan, with which it will compete. Other rivals will include the high-powered versions of the Audi A6 and A7 Sportback, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and CLS, Jaguar XF and possibly even the 2014 Cadillac CTS.
The Italian carmaker said the new Ghibli will be available with two turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engines, with the most powerful version to likely have the same output it does on the Quattroporte (404hp / 410PS), an eight-speed automatic transmission and both rear-wheel drive and the new “Q4” all-wheel drive system.
Maserati also confirmed that the Ghibli will become the first production car in the brand's history to be powered by a diesel engine, which in this case will be a 3.0-litter V6 turbo-diesel, though, no other details were released.
"The Ghibli will have a sportier character compared to the larger Quattroporte," said Maserati in a statement. "It is Maserati’s first saloon in this segment and reflects the company’s belief that a growing number of premium executive car buyers are looking to make an individual statement through a car that is distinctive, elegant and luxurious."
The new Maserati sports sedan will make its first public appearance at the Shanghai Auto Show this month and go on sale later this year, possibly as early as late summer in certain markets.
