Ginetta Unveils New G60 Sports Car Powered by a Mustang-Sourced V6

type='html'>
|

Last week Ginetta announced that it would soon unveil a new 310HP sports car with a carbon fibre body. Well, we have to admit the littleBritish car company has kept its promise by launching the G60, the first mid-engine model in its range since the G32 in 1989.
The only thing the new G60 shares with its predecessor is the engine layout. The G60 boasts carbonfibre tub and body based on that of the Farbio GTS, which itself is based on the 2002 Farboud GT.
Ginetta, which last March acquired Farbio, has redesigned the car with the focus being on reducing its weight. Apart from its carbonfibre construction, Ginetta’s new model has no steering assistance, servo-assisted brakes, ABS or electronic stability control systems. As a result, it tips the scales at just 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs) or 400 kg (881 pounds) less than the GTS.
The naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6 comes is sourced from the Ford Mustang and is rated at 310HP. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and a Quaife limited-slip differential, while the suspension uses wishbones on all four corners.
Although 310HP is nothing to brag about in today’s sports car arena, the low weight allows the G60 to achieve a sub-4.0 seconds 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint time and a top speed in excees of 165mph (265 km/h).
Moreover, the G60 will be more exclusive than most rivals, since Ginetta plans on manufacturing just 50 units.

It’s Got Track'ster Soul: Kia Unveils Second Generation of its Compact “Urban Utility Vehicle”

type='html'>
|

Like the late Frank Sinatra said “if you can make it there, you’ll make it everywhere” – which is why Kia chose the Big Apple, a city it rightly names as the world’s most iconic metropolis, to launch the second generation, 2014 Soul.
Mind you, despite retaining the distinctive profile the new Soul is not a revamp of the current model that was launched in 2009 but an all-new car that rides on a new platform that’s 28.7 stiffer than before. The second-generation Soul was designed by Kia’s California studio, which drew inspiration from the Track’ster concept that was unveiled at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, and engineered both in the US and Korea.
Compared to the outgoing model, the wheelbase has grown by 20.3 mm, to 2,570 and the width by 15.24 mm to 1,800mm, while the height has remained the same at 1,610 mm. This means that front and rear legroom have increased by 20.3 and 5.1 mm respectively, front headroom by 5.1 mm and front shoulder room by 7.62 mm.
Design wise, the new car has kept the shape of the glasshouse, the vertically-mounted taillights and the tall riding height of the first Soul and added the Track’ster-inspired trapezoidal front air intake, redesigned grille and LED daytime running lights and real “halo” lights that are also seen in the 2014 Sorento and Forte sedan.
“The all-new Soul was one of the more difficult assignments we’ve taken on”, said Tom Kearns, chief designer at the company’s California studio. “Striking the right balance between the wonderful design of the current car with the audacious proportions and stance of the Track’ster was daunting. It proved to be a truly collaborative effort with guidance from Peter Schreyer in Frankfurt and assistance from our studio in Korea. In the end, we’ve kept the essence of Soul while infusing it with more presence inside and out.”
The cabin features a circular motif, with Kearn noting that his design team “wanted to lift as many of the Track’ster’s interior reference points as possible”. There’s a triple-center instrument cluster, circle door panels for the power window and lock switches, and circular pods for the audio and trip control buttons at the steering wheel – which, as you’ve probably have guessed, is circular, too!
On the other hand, the eight-inch HD capacitive touch screen is most certainly not circular, but it does offer a wide viewing angle and one-finger scrolling between menus and features like the UVO eServices infotainment system.
Ultra-high and high strength steel make up a full 66 percent of the chassis construction, allowing for lower weight and improved torsional rigidity. The suspension layout is the same as before, with McPherson struts up front and a torsion beam axle at the rear, but it has been thoroughly revised for better handling and the steering box has been moved to the rear for improved feel.
The Base version of the 2014 Soul is powered by a 1.6-liter GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) four-cylinder with 130HP and 118 lb-ft (160 Nm) of torque. The Plus and Exclaim models feature the 2.0-liter NU unit that’s rated at 164HP and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque. Buyers of the Base and the Plus Soul can choose between a manual or an automatic transmission, both six-speeders, while the Exclaim is available only with the auto.

Infiniti Unveils the 2014 QX60 Hybrid at the New York Auto Show

type='html'>
|

Aside from the Q50 sedan, Infiniti also displayed the 2014 QX60 Hybrid at the New York Auto Show. The luxury crossover uses the same hybrid powertrain as the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybridon which it is based and will add to Infiniti’s range of hybrid models that include the Q50 and Q70 Hybrid (currently named M Hybrid).
Like the Pathfinder Hybrid, the QX60 Hybrid is projected to average 26 mpg (9 liters/100 km) - a 24 percent increase over non-hybrid QX60 models - with driving range expected to exceed 500 miles (805 km). The hybrid version of the seven-seat luxury crossover, formerly known as the JX series, will be priced about $3,000 above the non-hybrid models, which start from $41,400.
The hybrid powertrain consists of a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter supercharged engine and 15 kW (20 hp) electric motor connected to a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The system develops a combined output of 250 horsepower, equivalent to the 3.5-liter V6’s 260 hp but with the advantage of 4-cylinder fuel economy. The QX60 Hybrid also features an Intelligent Regenerative Braking system that partially recharges the battery during vehicle braking.
The car’s compact lithium-ion battery is located under the 3rd row seat, so that the QX60 Hybrid maintains its flat rear floor for easier passenger access to the rear seats, with cargo room not affected.
The QX60 Hybrid offers a wide range of available advanced technologies, such as Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) and Around View Monitor.
Infiniti’s new gasoline-electric hybrid will go on sale this summer in the United States.

Subaru Unveils XV Crosstrek Hybrid at the New York Auto Show

|

Having been on the US market for just over a year now, Subaru's XV Crosstrek didn't necessarily need an appeal-boosting new version or improvements at this very moment, but the Japanese automaker has decided that the 2013 NY motor show is the perfect venue to launch a hybrid version of the crossover.
It is actually a very important car, as it is Subaru's first ever hybrid and it has therefore got to prove itself.
Subaru's hybrid system uses the firm's proven 2.0-liter flat-four, which puts out 148 hp. The hybrid part stems from the fact that inside the casing of the CVT transmission fitted to the XV Hybrid, one will find a 13.4 hp (~10 kW) electric motor, which is seamlessly integrated into the powertrain.
That means the green XV can get a combined figure of 31 mpg, or 7.6 l/100km, and as much as 34 mpg (6.9 l/100km) on the highway.
Inside the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, one will find a new blue-backlit instrument cluster, as well as the customary center stack-mounted display, to track how much power is being used and how much is going back into the battery courtesy of the regenerative braking system the car is fitted with.
Last, but not least, is the vehicle's ability to travel in electric-only mode at low speeds (Subaru fails to give specifics here), and the gasoline engine is fired up once speed reaches a certain threshold or a burst of acceleration is needed.
